What technology infrastructure do I need in order to use American Well™?
At a minimum, you will need either a phone or a Web browser and Internet access to use American Well. If you have one, you can also use your Web camera, but it isn't required.
What is CPT code 0074T?
In 2004, the American Medical Association published a new CPT code 0074T that allows US health plans to reimburse physicians for online consultations. Code 0074T is defined as: "Online evaluation & management service, per encounter, provided by a physician, using the Internet or similar electronic communications network, in response to a patient's request."
How are physicians paid?
Physicians are compensated for American Well consultations in the same way as an office visit. This includes the consumer's co-pay and the health plan portion (depending on the member's benefit). American Well claims are often processed more quickly, because the claim is automatically submitted during the consultation, and the member's co-pay is charged to a credit card before the consultation begins.
How are physicians credentialed?
Participating physicians are credentialed by the health plan or delivery network operating the American Well service. Typically, physicians participating in a product network (e.g., PPO) are eligible for delivering service on the system.
What information is available to a physician before the consultation?
Before a consultation, the physician can review a health summary report that includes specific issues a consumer would like to discuss. The physician can also access summaries from previous online conversations and data from electronic feeds containing claims, PBM, and predictive modeling information. Based on this information, the physician can choose to proceed with the consultation or recommend a more appropriate provider to the patient.
