Douglas J. Wenners was named SVP National Provider Solutions and regional President, Local Group and Individual Business, for Anthem, Inc. on June 3, 2013. In this role, Mr. Wenners is responsible for nearly 7 million Anthem customers in the group and individual business throughout Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, Maine and Virginia. Mr. Wenners is the senior executive leader of the region’s P&L, including sales, account management, network management, underwriting, product delivery, and regulatory and customer relationships.
Since January, 2011, Mr. Wenners has also overseen Anthem’s provider relations and contracting strategies. In this role, he has led the design and implementation of Anthem’s patient centered primary care program. First reported by The Wall Street Journal on January 27, 2012, Anthem’s patient centered primary care program is an industry-leading effort designed to invest over $1 billion into the company’s primary care network, ensuring lower cost, higher quality coverage for its customers. Mr. Wenners also has overseen a period of unprecedented growth for AIM Specialty Health, a national leader in specialty benefits management with over 35 million members covered across 50 states, D.C. and US territories. During his tenure, AIM has expanded its traditional management services in radiology and cardiology into new clinical areas, including the creation of a best-in-class oncology management solution focused on improving the quality and reducing the costs of cancer care.
Mr. Wenners brings a wealth of experience and extensive market knowledge to his role at Anthem. An industry leader with nearly 20 years of healthcare experience, he has held numerous senior leadership positions within Anthem. A member of Anthem’s Growth, Planning and Operations Councils, Mr. Wenners has had significant impact on corporate strategy, operational effectiveness and efficiency, organizational development, and revenue/earnings growth. Prior to his current role, Mr. Wenners served as President and General Manager of New Hampshire, a responsibility he assumed in April, 2008. He has worked for Anthem for nearly 14 years, beginning his career as legal counsel for the company’s New Hampshire business. Prior to joining Anthem, he was an attorney in private practice at the New Hampshire law firm of Wiggin & Nourie, P.A.
Mr. Wenners received a B.A. from Boston College, a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School, and a M.S. from Dartmouth College. He presently serves on the Board of American Well, the nation’s leading telehealth company based in Boston, MA, as well as on the Board of Trustees of the New Hampton School. He is a former Trustee of Southern New Hampshire University, and is a past Board member of the New Hampshire Business & Industry Association (statewide Chamber of Commerce). Mr. Wenners is a frequent guest lecturer at the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy & Clinical Practice. He resides in Bedford, New Hampshire with his wife, Eleni, and their three children, Caroline, Elizabeth and Eleanor. In his spare time, Mr. Wenners enjoys spending time with his family and watching his daughters play ice hockey, lacrosse and soccer.
