Home monitoring with live doctor visits revolutionizes patient care

Boston, Mass., (September 30, 2014) – Until now, telehealth has been largely confined to urgent care conditions such as flu, pink eye, and sinus infections; the longitudinal health data needed to manage chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease was too difficult to capture and share remotely. With the updated Amwell™ app and HealthKit™, patients can now choose to share key health metrics such as heart rate, blood pressure, and blood glucose level, as well as nutrition and fitness information with a doctor, opening telehealth to treatment of many more conditions.

Chronic conditions impose major costs on the United States economy and on millions of individual lives. According to the Centers for Disease Control, half of US adults — about 117 million people — live with one or more chronic health conditions. With frequent hospital admissions, readmissions and more routine care required, about 85 percent of the nation’s healthcare dollars are spent on chronic care. Now that American Well is using HealthKit to track and share longitudinal health data in a video visit, physicians are able to perform comprehensive clinical assessments and ongoing management, with the promise of lowered cost, improved outcomes and easier follow-up for home-bound patients.

“By bringing HealthKit insight to a live doctor visit, Amwell introduces a revolution in follow up and treatment of chronic patients” said Roy Schoenberg, MD, CEO of American Well. “Apple’s elegant entry into home and biometric healthcare, coupled with the power of telehealth, is poised to create a new ecosystem where fact-based, quality healthcare can be delivered by live physicians to those who need it most — chronic, home-bound patients. This is no less than the beginning of a new era in home care delivery.”

The Amwell App is available for free from the App Store on iPhone and iPod touch or at www.AppStore.com.
