Medical apps are a fast-growing sector of mobile, with 53 million downloads July 2017 through June 2018 in the US.

BOSTON – December 11, 2018 – American Well®, a leading U.S. telehealth platform, today announced that according to App Annie, the mobile performance standard, American Well is the #1 telehealth platform in the US calculated by combined iOS and Google Play downloads.1

American Well’s consumer app, Amwell, was previously named the most popular telehealth app in 2014, 2015 and 2016 in the U.S.2 Amwell is free to download from the App Store or Google Play and gives people the ability to see a US board-certified doctor or therapist of their choosing by video, in less than three minutes on average.

“The era of digital health – delivering healthcare over technology – is finally here,” said Roy Schoenberg, MD, MPH, CEO at American Well. “In 2018, we saw more movement than ever before within the telehealth sector. Wherever you turn, whether it’s published research, new clients, reimbursement, policy changes, business or revenue, telehealth is a technology that’s here to stay.”

According to App Annie, this is representative of much broader mobile trends:

  • Medical is a fast growing sector for mobile in the US by downloads, up 20% YoY.
  • There were over 53 million medical app downloads in the twelve months ending June 2018 in the US.
  • Downloads of medical apps in the twelve months ending June 2018 in the US has grown 7x faster than overall app downloads versus the 12 months prior.
  • Americans are turning to mobile more than ever before to manage all aspects of their lives, spending 2.5 hours per day engaging with apps on their phone or mobile device.

“While we have seen the majority of consumers adopt social networking, gaming, and entertainment on mobile for some time, consumers are increasingly leveraging apps to take care of their everyday basic needs like banking, insurance, and healthcare,” said Danielle Levitas, Executive Vice President of Market Insights. “Getting medical care from an app is convenient and can help reduce costs for consumers and doctors. Amwell’s performance in mobile demonstrates its leadership and commitment to deliver best-in-class mobile customer experiences.”

Looking ahead to 2019, American Well President and CEO Dr. Roy Schoenberg predicts significant, positive changes for healthcare, anchored in the understanding that technology – namely telehealth – is transforming the business of healthcare by changing the way care is delivered.

“This year we saw a surge of new consumer health data coming in through new sensors and wearable technologies,” said Schoenberg. “This data tells us something very important about each individual’s body – and critically, who needs care in a specific moment. Now, we have to figure out how to deliver that care; I am confident that the solution is going to be telehealth, no question about it.”

1Determined by looking at combined iOS and Google Play downloads of American Well’s published and whitelisted apps from January 2014 – September 2018 among the following apps: Chiron Health, Doctor On Demand, eVisit, HealthTap, InTouch, MDLive, PlushCare, SnapMD, and Teladoc.

2Based on combined iOS and Google Play downloads. The telehealth category as defined by American Well includes only apps that had live patient-doctor video visit functionality at the time of the download.
