BOSTON (Jan. 28, 2016) American Well, the largest telehealth technology and services company, and creator of Amwell, the app for online doctor visits, today announced that Peter L. Slavin, MD, president of Massachusetts General Hospital, has joined its board of directors.

Dr. Slavin joins American Well’s board of directors at an incredible time for the company in terms of its overall growth, as well as new investments being made on the product side to catalyze the future of telehealth services and delivery for both patients and providers. Today the company serves more than 30 health systems and 40 health plans. These healthcare organizations are leveraging American Well’s technology and consultative services not only to address telehealth for acute care needs, but increasingly, to connect their providers with their patients for chronic condition management – including a variety of use cases, from behavioral health to diabetes to dermatology, to post-surgical follow-up.

“Using technology to make health care better, more accessible, timelier and more convenient is essential as we look for ways to advance medical care while making that care more affordable,” said Dr. Slavin. “Tools such as telehealth, virtual visits and mobile apps that help people live healthier lives have fast become important aspects of high-quality medical care. I am honored and excited to have the opportunity to serve on the board of American Well and see this remarkable technology explosion from a new perspective.”

Dr. Slavin became president of Massachusetts General Hospital in 2003, and since then has expanded and strengthened the institution physically, programmatically, financially and technologically. The MGH, under his leadership, is currently ranked the number 1 hospital in the nation by US News and World Report. From 1999-2002 he served as chairman and CEO of the Massachusetts General Physicians Organization, which includes more than 1,700 physicians, 1,000 of which were employed. From 1997 to 1999, Dr. Slavin served as president of Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Before that, he did his training in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, and was senior vice president and chief medical officer from 1994 to 1997.

Dr. Slavin graduated from Harvard College in 1979, Harvard Medical School in 1984, and Harvard Business School in 1990. He teaches internal medicine and healthcare management at Harvard Medical School, where he is professor of healthcare policy. Dr. Slavin also serves on the Board of the Association of American Medical Colleges.

“Dr. Slavin’s years of experience as president of one of the most well regarded hospitals in the nation will bring invaluable guidance to American Well as we continue to innovate and deliver telehealth solutions that foster a superior consumer experience as well as support providers and healthcare leaders looking to telehealth to transform how care is managed,” said Dr. Ido Schoenberg, chairman and co-founder, American Well.

Dr. Slavin joins other healthcare business leaders on American Well’s board of directors including:

  • Former Massachusetts Governor Deval L. Patrick
  • CEO of Teva North American Generics Brendan O’Grady
  • Senior Advisor and former Director at WPP Group, Stanley (Bud) Morten
  • Anthem Regional President Douglas Wenners
