American Well’s Online Care Group is a physician owned and operated medical practice that has been operating for over 2 years. We exclusively provide telehealth on various AmericanWell platforms. At this time, we utilize primarily Board Certified Pediatricians, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Internal Medicine physicians and provide acute (urgent) care via telehealth. We practice across 47 states; 24 hours a day,365 days a year.
In addition to our medical practice, the Online Care Group also manages a nation-wide Behavioral Health practice (staffed by PhD’s, Psy.D’s and LCSW’s) , as well as a Nutrition practice (staffed by Registered Dieticians). Our providers are both single- and multi-state licensed and credentialed to work across the country.
We operate as an urgent care model. Some examples of the typical types of conditions that we treat include:
- Acute Bronchitis
- Respiratory Infection
- Back pain
- Sprains and strains
- Smoking Cessation
- Minor behavioral health concerns
- Weight loss
- Exacerbations of chronic disease (asthma, diabetes)
Our patients have simple to actute care needs, that don’t require a trip to the Emergency room. Patients may also be seen for triage or prescription refills.
In most states, prescriptions may result from a telehealth encounter if sufficient data is available to make a proper diagnosis. However, in the case of some states, telehealth encounters are not always eligible for a prescription.
Online Care Group physicians can only prescribe certain medications online. We do not allow prescribing of:
- Controlled substances (narcotics, anxiety medications, ADHD medications)
- Muscle relaxants
- Medications for erectile dysfunction
- Any additional state specific controlled medications (additional pain medications, pseudoephedrine)
Also, please note, there MUST be video connection in order to prescribe; physicians cannot prescribe based on a phone or chat encounter.
The Online Care Group has several requirements for candidates to join the group:
- Licensed to practice in at least one state
- Must be board certified
- Must have graduate from an accredited Residency Program
- Carry an active DEA license
Providers document directly on the American Well platform. The platform also allows for chat with the patient, dissemination of patient education materials, e-prescribing and sick slip generation.
Currently we are offering providers the ability to work on-demand for American Well clients In certain circumstances we may schedule or “purchase” provider time based on state specific volume or need.
In order for a candidate to be considered an applicant for Online Care Group providers visit the American Well webpage and submit an application form. If the provider’s credentials meet our criteria and the provider’s attributes match our current needs, a recruiter will reach out with further instruction.
Once your application has been reviewed, you will be asked to complete onboarding documents and credentialing paperwork and then participate in online training as reflected the chart below:
A mobile Apple device, preferably an iPad, but the technology will work on an iPhone, with the iOS 8.0 or later software.
When providers are on the system, they are able to contact our Network Operations Center; a 24/7 support team for any physician on the system. The Network Operations team can assist with anything from technology questions to assisting with scheduling.
In order to be successful in telehealth, there is a certain level of technological skills that each provider must possess:
- Comfortable familiarity with the Internet including web browsers
- An ability to maneuver an iPad or iPhone including downloading and installing apps
The Online Care Group has a Quality team that works with our providers to develp policies and guidelines, review visits and assoicated documentation, and provides supplemental training and feedback.
We have the Network Operations team available to help you anytime of day, as well as policies and procedures in place to ensure that as a provider you can assist the patient in connecting with emergency care in their area.
Are there more full-time positions available?
We do not currently have full-time positions available, however when we look for provdiers to fill those spots, the first place we always look is in our pool of existing contracted providers. If you express interest in future opportunities, we will definitely consider you as a candidate.
How are patients directed to the system?
Patients access our providers directly through American Well’s platforms or receive benefits by an employer or insurance company that is contracted with Online Care Group. All billing and payments from patients are dealt with administratively and is not the responsibility of the provider.
What is the malpractice coverage?
The Online Care Group provides malpractice coverage for each visit that you have while seeing Online Care Group patients. The coverage is a claims made policy with tail coverage. More details will be provided as you move through the on-boarding process.
How will I be paid?
Most providers are paid fee for service based on the visits that they perform. Those that make themselves available during peak hours and who have licenses in busy states are generally most active in seeing patients. In select situations, we may ask providers to be scheduled for shifts. In these occasions the provider may be be paid hourly, or a combination of hourly stipend plus fee for service payment.
